I have been considering a career change for some time. I want to get out of traditional print design and into an interactive design or front-end web development role. Lately, I have been interested in getting into video game design and motion graphics, ever since my friend Stu got his new gig at Lucas Films. (Congrats Stu!)

Anyway, I have been watching this DVD series I purchased about a year and a half ago – The Structure of Man. The video series has taught me a lot. I can actually draw most of the human skeletal system, but I am still having a tough time fleshing in characters. More practice and more study I am sure. I got lucky a few weeks ago and found an arts center located about 10 minutes away from my house. At this center, there is an open session life drawing class that happens every Thursday evening. I missed the first 2 weeks due to family obligations. I finally made it out last night. I have not attended a life drawing session since my days back at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh years ago – and I was horrible at drawing then…

The model was smokin’! Much different than the older models I remember at AIP. The session was pretty small. Only about 7 or 8 people. Let me tell you, I struggled through this session. I am one of those people who is ultra competitive and wants to be the best at everything, but I was so intimidated and frustrated through this session. I left early. I could not take the embarrassment any further. I had no idea drawing was that tough. I also learned that there were some guys from Mythic Entertainment in the session. I would like to work with a company like that. They’re a good local game company. Keeps me from having to move to CA to get with a games company…

Well, here are some of the sketches from the session. They are as bad as I think they are, but I am looking forward to getting some practice this week and heading back to the session next Thursday. Thanx to Josh Yavelberg for organizing the sessions and giving me something to aspire to. Watching you work gave me a break from the personal berating I was giving myself for not paying attention in class years ago and not continuing to practice throughout the years… I just wanted to do layout…

Looking forward to next week.
